Starcraft 2 Thoughts: Forward Defense when using a Slow Immobile Army

This game TLO vs Loco, a ZvP, cast by Duckvillelol, shows some very good strategic play, my comments and spoilers below VOD.

One of the core elements of game balance in Starcraft 2 is that more powerful Tier 3 Units tend to be slower, whether it is Thors, Carriers, Broodlords, or Battlecruisers.

This presents some fundamental weakness that many players ignore when they use an Army or Unit composition centered around those really strong but slow units.

A slow Army can't respond to attacks fast enough to defend a base if it has moved out or is actually attacking, this is one of the reasons why Day9 says a Meching Terran should expand towards the enemy.

It will be easier for the slow moving Mech Army to defend Expo that is close to it when it attacks enemy.

TLO plans to go Broodlords in this game, at ~14:05 game time he starts dropping Creep from an Overlord in the center of the map, with a Queen right there to drop creep tumors.

This was part of TLO's plan to use a forward defense, he did almost all his fighting around the middle, or center, of the Map.

That way it didn't really matter how long it would take his Army to get to any base to defend it, since the enemy would have to go through his very strong, but slow army first.  He also had good Overlord placement to spot incoming Drops.

This wasn't an accident, note at ~9:20 game time (6:48 VOD time) that he has triple Evolution Chambers, one at main and two at Natural so they can't get sniped all at once, getting 3 upgrades at a time.

Later in the game, 23:02 game time (~16:34 VOD time), you can see that TLO has his tech well spread out, his Greater Spire is at his 4th base, and it is walled in with a couple of extra Evos, a Spore, & the mineral line itself, with a Spine for active defense.

That layout would keep Zealot or DT from killing it quickly, and he has a second Spire at his 3rd base.

I really like the planning and base layout TLO used in this game.

Impressive!
