"Extra Credits" on gaming Difficulty and Fun
Couple of very good discussions on gaming, IIRC Extra Credits is associated with Penny Arcade, http://penny-arcade.com/, in some fashion.
Direct link for Youtube above http://youtu.be/BWFzFsHc75U
Link for Extra Credits Youtube Channel http://www.youtube.com/user/ExtraCreditz/featured
They do an exceptional job of articulating some of the differences in games and gamers.
Stuff I'd understood, but never heard clearly stated before, I know I much prefer games of Depth, as they term it, big part of the reason I still like Diablo 2 but can't stand Diablo 3.
Or Chess vs Checkers.
Difficulty isn't the motivator, or at least not the sole motivator, I also like Minecraft.
Worth watching if your into gaming, and very worth following IMHO.
Twitter and more info for them is available on their Youtube Channel.

Nerd News: Paypal likes to freeze accounts it seems
Article today at Ars about Paypal freezing Mailpile's account http://arstechnica.com/business/2013/09/paypal-freezes-45000-of-mailpiles-crowdfunded-dollars/
Paypal has frozen Notch's, the Master of Minecraft, Paypal account at least twice before, according to his blog posts: (15 Jun 2009) I wonder why I used paypal.. & (10 Sep 2010) Working on a Friday update, crying over paypal.
If you live in US or Australia you can buy Minecraft Prepaid cards from many stores, I blogged details at http://cliffsesportcorner.blogspot.com/2013/08/minecraft-prepaid-pc-mac-cards-in-usa.html
I am not a fan of Paypal, I have blogged about the reasons before, see Paypal Make It Right!
Just click on Paypal or Minecraft labels to see all my posts on those topics, labels can also be found in cloud at left side of blog, or at bottom left of every post.

Minecraft Prepaid PC & Mac cards in USA & AUS
Problems buying Minecraft with Credit Card in USA or Australia?
Or wanting to gift the game in those countries?
Your far from the only person.
Girlfriend and I have been wanting to do Minecraft LAN, but only had copy on my machine, when I went to buy a copy for her, found out can't buy Minecraft (from USA) with credit card, and I refuse to use PayPal for several reasons (have more than one friend that has been really screwed by them & I don't mean over something little like a game or two).
I was looking for a solution for close to 2 weeks before I stumbled on this little tidbit on their site, accidentally via a Google search (full list of stores that carry them at link) http://minecraft.net/prepaid
You can buy Minecraft Prepaid Card at local chain stores, lets you pay cash so no need for credit card or PayPal account.
I had (foolishly?) been looking in store http://minecraft.net/store and thought the card was something like card game tie in (like Pokeman cards or something).
Think part of the issue might be it isn't written by native US English speaker?
If it was labeled as "Minecraft Prepaid Card" on the Store page, like it is when you click on the link from the store, it would have been clear from the beginning.
Important Note: You MUST include the spaces in the CODE from the Prepaid card for it to work, returns error otherwise.
Additional Minecraft resources:
I plan a post in the very near future setting up Mac to PC Minecraft LAN, which we are using, I have it working smoothly, but still doing some tests to make sure I don't include any redundant steps, or miss any common bugs.
I came close to giving up for a while, and using old Win 7 laptop instead of Mac, and my Google searches showed me I am not only person having problem.

Minecraft Water Trap
Elegant Drowning Trap From http://www.youtube.com/user/AkifHD?feature=watch
Via http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Tutorials/Monster_Spawner_traps#Flow_Trap
Found this while waiting for Dreamhack, I will have to try it out, have a Zombie spawner on a map that I set up as a quick simple grinder, had river near spawner and just dug out enough for river to push Zombies to one wall were I can hack at their legs.
This would make it a lot more efficient, and wouldn't take much work to add.

XCOM "Rescue: Russia - Locate VIP"
If your into Minecraft you have probably seen Paul's Minecraft Tutorials or streams.
Paul is a big fan of XCOM, and so it is natural that he is all over the current version.
If you want to follow his entire XCOM series the playlist is http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLEbtIY4p_ltqJiLj2nhn_FbrXxSSY5xO1
If you like Paul's shows please follow him either on Youtube http://www.youtube.com/user/paulsoaresjr/featured or Twitter https://twitter.com/paulsoaresjr
I always encourage people to follow Casters, Gamers, & Bloggers that they like, not only does it help a little for those people (guess I am one of those people as well), but for a lot of people that produce content like that, it is one of the best forms of feedback.
Honestly most of us that produce things for people to watch or read on the internet will never make much money from it, we do it because we like to share stuff with people.
Combination of entertainment and education IMHO.

Security & Hacking: Java Vulnerability (another one)
http://arstechnica.com/security/2012/09/yet-another-java-flaw-allows-complete-bypass-of-security-sandbox/
Disable or Remove Java unless you need to use it from Browsers.
AFAIK using Java for things like playing Minecraft should be okay, but at this point I would not have Java running on a browser unless required for work.
In that case I would be making noise about more secure options, and use Steve Gibson's suggestion of having a 2nd Browser that is ONLY used when have to use Java.
For example if you use Chrome as your main Browser, then use Firefox when you have to use Java.
How to Disable Java in your browser:
Windows/Internet Explorer users guide for disabling Java http://antivirus.about.com/od/securitytips/ht/How-To-Disable-Java-In-Internet-Explorer.htm
Mac users guide to disable Java in Chrome, Firefox, & Safari http://www.maclife.com/article/howtos/how_disable_java_your_mac_web_browser
For Chrome cut and paste about:plugins into the url bar, I couldn't figure out any other way to get there, there probably is but this is easy.
If you have any problems check both links in this section, the browsers work pretty much the same on Windows or Mac.
Or post question in comments and I will try to help.

Nerd Gear: GameKlip for Android
GameKlip http://buy.thegameklip.com/
[Edited to add, check out FAQ for links for checking on compatibility with controller and games that support it http://buy.thegameklip.com/pages/faqs]
This looks cool, they have wireless version available for Rooted phones, and wired version for non Rooted Phones.
They briefly demo Minecraft, a game I would use this for, I also like how it seems balanced enough to use as a stand, see Twit.TV review link below for example.
Also as a Trekkie, I notice how it looks a lot like a Starship from Star Trek ^_^
After I get my Galaxy Note 2, assuming they make clip for that phone, I will definitely give this a try.

PSA | Security & Hacking: Java Patch has critcal bug(s?)
See Ars link for full details http://arstechnica.com/security/2012/08/critical-bug-discovered-in-newest-java/
In case you missed it, this patch was out of cycle on released yesterday to deal with this Zero Day Java Exploit
At this point I am joining lot of other people in recommending disabling Java from all the browsers you use.
AFAIK using Java on your computer, but not with Browser, like to play Minecraft should be okay, I have heard had more than one computer professional say that.
If there are online services that you need to use for work, or whatever, that require Java in Browser you can do several things:

If there are online services that you need to use for work, or whatever, that require Java in Browser you can do several things:
- Ask that company if they have any Java alternatives, or if they are working on alternatives because of the Security risks of Java.
- Use a second browser only for the sites that you have to use Java for, make sure you keep it patched (most of the mainstream browsers now disable Java if you don't have current version installed)!
- Disable Java on your browser and only turn it on when needed, then turn it off again.

Minecraft: Water Elevator
From Paulsoaresjr's "Minecraft Tutorials-How to Survive" series, this is Number 24 Water Elevator.
I haven't tested this yet, Paul posted this VOD back in Dec 2010, so not sure if it works with current version of Minecraft or not, but it is still very cool.
I just recently started playing with Minecraft, had dabbled a little in Beta some time ago, was looking for games gf might be interested in, so looked at Minecraft more seriously, and found we both like Minecraft.
We also enjoy Paul's casting!!! If you do as well, please subscribe to his Youtube Channel or Twitter @paulsoaresjr http://twitter.com/paulsoaresjr
