Problems & Solutions for Apple ID 2 Step Verification (2 Factor Authentication)

Though I blogged about this when it first came out, http://cliffsesportcorner.blogspot.com/2013/03/apple-adds-2-step-verification-2-factor.html

I learned a couple of important tidbits today about it: 1) Verification does not follow when phone is replaced, 2) You need to type recovery key, not cut and paste it.

Thanks to Jeff Kibuule for tweeting about these issues https://twitter.com/jeffkibuule/status/333765576226914305

That is where I learned about these problems.

I agree with Jeff that Apple Store employees need to be aware of this issue when they suggest swapping phones for customers.

I hope this saves people from some headaches!

Also really suggest people that use this two step verification have more than one Trusted Device, and more than one hard copy of the Recovery Key securely stored, because even if you are trying to recover lost password, you will still need a minimum of two of the 3 following:

  • Apple ID password
  • Trusted Device [ SMS capable phone OR iOS device with Find My iPhone enabled]
  • Recovery Key [14 digit Recovery Key Apple provides, they say print and keep in a safe place]

iOS 6.1 Update & Problems

There are critical Security Patches in iOS 6.1, so I strongly recommend updating to it if your iOS device is supported.

See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5642 for more on the Security issues addressed.

There are a couple of problems being reported with iOS 6.1 for iPhone 5 and iPod Touch 5th generation (current late 2012 release Touch).

Some iPhone 5 owners are having problems with LTE after updating to iOS 6.1

See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5642 for more information and possible solution for LTE problems with iOS 6.1 on iPhone 5

Solution that seems to work for some people is to reset network settings "Settings-->General-->Reset-->Reset Network Settings"

5th Gen iPod Touch owners are reporting some problems with iOS 6.1,  they are getting "Unable to Verify Update" error message.

Claiming no net connection, even with good signal or even via cable PC/Mac for some people.

One possible solution or work around, as well as more details at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4751554?tstart=0

Possible solution, posted by oneGodguitarist, from link above:

"It took me a while but I finally got it to update.  I did a couple of things.  I reloaded itunes as "repair" just to make sure that nothing was missing.  The thing that really worked was that I tried connecting my device to another laptop with itunes.  It updated on there but to factory settings.  Then, I was able to go back to the main computer and reconnect and restore."

Nerd Gear: Lifeproof Cases for iPhone & iPad

Mentioned these before, but this is a new to me VOD of these cases.

Looks like they finally have the iPhone 5 case in production, but having problems keeping up with demand http://www.lifeproof.com/shop/us_en/iphone-5/iphone-5-black

Hoping they come out with wide selection of colors like they did for iPhone 4, http://www.lifeproof.com/shop/us_en/iphone-4s-4/iphone-4-4s

We are getting my girlfriend a iPhone 5 for Christmas and she really wants a purple case to go with it, what is it with woman and purple anyway?

Their iPad cases http://www.lifeproof.com/shop/us_en/ipad/

We were talking about these the other day, she was thinking after we upgrade her to newer Retina iPad, then she might be willing to test iPad in one of these cases at the pool, beach, or hot tub.

I will certainly post about it if we ever do test any of these cases in the water, though I don't know if she would ever be willing to risk her iOS devices on purpose ^_^

Guide, How To "VNC from an iPad or iPhone to a Mac"

http://osxdaily.com/2012/10/18/vnc-from-iphone-ipad-to-mac-remote-access/

I haven't used this myself, I still don't have iOS device myself, though I will probably get an iPod Touch sooner or later, or failing that I will get my girlfriend's iPad 2 when we upgrade her to iPad 3 or iPad 4

I do have an iMac, in part cause I didn't want to have to switch to Windows 8, and with Bootcamp I can run Windows 7, and eventually Linux (just starting to play with Linux).

Anyway I have been looking into VPN solutions for my girlfriend, because she is a database manager at work, and while she has work provided laptop, it usually stays at work in the dock unless she knows she is going to need it.

She doesn't like carrying it around.

But she loves her iPad 2, unfortunately because it doesn't support flash, and for some other issues, she can't always take care of everything work related that she would like to from her iPad.

If we find a VPN solution for iOs that solvers her problems I will certainly post about it, other wise we are thinking about maybe a 2nd work Windows 8 phone or phablet to solve that problem.
