Anandtech review of Razer Edge

http://www.anandtech.com/show/6858/the-razer-edge-review

Good review by Vivek Gowri @vivg91

Vivek mentions that hardware wise the Edge is a "monster".

I totally agree with that, one point I would emphasis, is that this is only Windows 8 Tablet I can find that has 8 GB of RAM!

Twice as much as any other tablet.

All that RAM plus SSD mean the Edge should work very well for most mobile business use, unless you need a portable workstation.

I used work with business people that had to travel all the time, I can see people like that, that are into gaming, might well pick the Edge to replace laptop for travel.

Even if their not into gaming, if they need for more than 4 GB of RAM, this would be only tablet available.

Even if work picks up the bill for checked luggage, carry on luggage is only stuff you can count on making it to your destination.

And you can carry a Edge + ARM tablet for same weight as single laptop, while having redundancy for basics like email.

Security & Hacking: "Malware Targeting Windows 8 Uses Google Docs"

http://www.symantec.com/connect/blogs/malware-targeting-windows-8-uses-google-docs

Snippet, "The latest version of Makadocs does not connect to a C&C server directly, rather, it uses Google docs as a proxy server."

I have always been leary of Google Docs, not because of Google, but because if you use it, you have to trust everyone that can save or modify the Docs.

You have to trust them to be not only non Malicious, but non Stupid, which is a much higher bar.

Nerd News: "Microsoft Cheapens Windows 8 with Ads"

http://winsupersite.com/windows-8/microsoft-cheapens-windows-8-ads

Now to be clear, since Paul's title makes it sound like the ads are in the OS, they are not, they are in the apps, he shows a couple of examples.

I have to say, I am feeling good about my decision to switch to Mac over Windows 8, though I am gonna use Windows 7 and eventually Linux via Bootcamp.

Though it feels ironic, I went to Apple for computer, but looking at Microsoft Surface Pro for laptop.

A upside down world.

Guide, How To "VNC from an iPad or iPhone to a Mac"

http://osxdaily.com/2012/10/18/vnc-from-iphone-ipad-to-mac-remote-access/

I haven't used this myself, I still don't have iOS device myself, though I will probably get an iPod Touch sooner or later, or failing that I will get my girlfriend's iPad 2 when we upgrade her to iPad 3 or iPad 4

I do have an iMac, in part cause I didn't want to have to switch to Windows 8, and with Bootcamp I can run Windows 7, and eventually Linux (just starting to play with Linux).

Anyway I have been looking into VPN solutions for my girlfriend, because she is a database manager at work, and while she has work provided laptop, it usually stays at work in the dock unless she knows she is going to need it.

She doesn't like carrying it around.

But she loves her iPad 2, unfortunately because it doesn't support flash, and for some other issues, she can't always take care of everything work related that she would like to from her iPad.

If we find a VPN solution for iOs that solvers her problems I will certainly post about it, other wise we are thinking about maybe a 2nd work Windows 8 phone or phablet to solve that problem.

Windows 8 Start Button Back!

Saw article here http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9231773/_5_buys_a_Start_button_Start_screen_bypass_for_Windows_8 about Stardock's  Beta
Start 8 product http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/ that lets you get Start button back on Windows 8, so if your stuck using Win 8 but want Start Button back give them a try.

Stardock has been around for some time, I have never used any of their products, but remember coming across them in research I did trying to accomplish some things on my desktop back when I was using Windows XP.

Windows Blinds is what most people know them for http://www.stardock.com/products/windowblinds/

I might try that out myself in the future, I have more computers that I use on a daily basis now than I ever did before, I use two most every day now, and am working on getting 3rd computer, Linux on old XP machine, plus budgeting for 2 more laptops/tablets (ether a small 13ish laptop or Surface Pro Tablet,  and a 17" gaming laptop).

Stardock has beta available for Start 8 http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/download.asp

Start 8 provides other features, such as "Optionally disable the desktop Windows 8 "hot spots"".

Nerd News: Samsung October 24, 2012 Event

http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9231772/Samsung_Galaxy_Note_2_coming_to_U.S._Oct._24_

No one knows for sure, but rumors are this will be launch announcement/party for Galaxy Note 2 in the US, this is the day before Microsoft event for Windows 8 so I wouldn't be surprised if there is something more or different.

I am hoping for more information on Galaxy Note 2, I am looking to switch to Note 2 from my Blackberry Bold 9780 when my current contract ends near Christmas.

Gonna miss all the hot key shortcuts Blackberry has, but RIM seems like it is in a death spiral, Google on the other hand seems rock solid.
