Starcraft 2 Skills: PvZ Defending 6 Pool
An elegant Six Pool Defense by WhiteRa, thank you WhiteRa for sharing your knowledge with us!
Note this Zerg player has seen this defense before, if you read comments at the end you will see that. My comments and one picture for illustration are below the VOD.
I don't have much to offer, WhiteRa is so good.
Only two points, one because I am not as good as WhiteRa I would be tempted to put a cannon behind the Proxy Gates and wall it in with the Pylons. Not sure that is good or bad idea, but would allow more room for error for lower skill players like myself.
Second point, this one I would like to talk to WhiteRa, Thundertoss, or Day9 about is the Pylon and Cannon placement for base defense.
WhiteRa blocks the hole in the mineral line that lings can run through with Pylon, then places the Cannon so that it will defend entire mineral line and Nexus when powered by that Pylon.
That forces a Mannered Cannon placement, which means it blocks his Probes from mining a little.
I think the placement in picture below is better, but I am not sure if blocking the mineral line hole is important because of GM level micro or some other factor I have not considered.
With the Pylon & Cannon placement illustrated below, the cannon doesn't block Probes, it will protect entire mineral line from lings, as well as the Nexus, and one Gas. That is my standard Cannon placement for base defense vs Zerg, on some maps I will even put my first Pylon in that location, and put forge to wall/Sim City the Cannon.

Khaldor is casting a new weekly Korean Tournament
http://www.own3d.tv/live/130010/KhaldorTV
I believed this just started today, at least the English language stream by Khaldor of it.
From what he has said it will run after GSLtwice a week Monday-Thursday.
Every or most of the the Korean Pro Teams will be sending a single player to compete, total of 8 players.
Winner (each day?) gets $100 and 2nd place gets $50 if I understod correctly.
I will update this post or add a new post once the details are a bit clearer (to me).

Starcraft 2 Skills: Mindset
Mindset is your viewpoint or attitude. Another way to think about it, is how much confidence you have in yourself. There are several components to mindset. I will not cover all of them in this single post, I do plan to talk more about mindset in the future.
Believe & You Can!
The most important point to remember, this applies to anything in life, is that the limiting factor for people is generally what they believe they can accomplished.
This is true both Mentally and Physically. This can affect Starcraft 2 performance both ways, since Starcraft involves the "physical skill of a musician, and the mental skill of chess" (Day9 paraphrase).
I worked a lot of Security in college, and a bit after college, since I could frequently get studying done while getting paid with that kind of work, if it was slow. I have also taken classes related to Security and Disaster Preparation after I finished college, since one of my plans for work late in my life, is to work at the City or County level in Disaster Management.
One of the most valuable things I have learned from this, was during an emergency, if you needed someone to get help to tell them "get Police, get Ambulance, or get Fire Department", not to say "call 911".
The reason for this, as the instructor explained, was that people tend to rise to the level of the expectations placed on them. If you tell them to call 911 and they don't have a cell phone, or they don't have signal or something, then they tend to sit there and do nothing or ask you to solve the problem.
But if you tell them to "get Ambulance" and they have a phone problem, they are a lot more likely to find a solution on their own.
I have also personally seen belief limit people's physical strength. I started lifting weights in College, I had wanted to lift weights in HS, but I was a skinny nerd and thought the jocks would laugh me out of the weight room.
In one of my college classes their was a bodybuilder, I asked him if he would help me learn to lift weights, and he said sure. I felt safe going to the gym with him, he was only 5'6" (1.68 Meters) tall, but he could bench press 400+ lbs (182+ kilos), it was like having a Big Brother (think Incontrol taking Idra to the gym).
If you read this Rick, thanks!
After I had been lifting for a while, Rick started telling me that sometimes, when I was doing benchpress, when I signaled for him to grab the bar, that I would finish the rep myself, as soon as his hands went under the bar, but before he actually touched the bar.
I would actually move the bar because I thought he was helping! I didn't really believe him at first, thought he was just trying to encourage me, even though he said it happens to everyone.
Then one day when I was spotting for him on bench press, he was stuck about 2/3 the way up for last rep and signaled me to help, and the minute I got my hands under the bar it shot up. I wasn't even touching the bar. Then I realized what he had told me was true.
A good Coach will be able to tell, at least some of the time, when you need to push harder at something. This is one of the most important things a Coach can do for you, since you really can't do it yourself. They will push you past your mental block! Or they will figure some way of tricking your brain for a moment, so you exceed what you thought was your potential!

Fear, the Internal Enemy
Fear is a natural safety mechanism to keep us from being eaten by Lions, Tigers, Bears, or whatever. But that part of our brain is very simple, it can't tell the the difference from imagined fear and a real Bear. So if we think something can hurt us, that part of our brain believes it.
Humans are social animals, which means among other things, that we care about our image because it affects our rank in the pack. So we tend to feel that losing hurts our image, just like wearing the wrong clothes or no clothes in certain situations. You can get stressed/afraid with SC2 either because you have told your brain that you get hurt when you lose or because you think it will affect your status. Or because of both.
To improve your Mindset you have to show your brain the opposite is true, because that part of the brain is simple, like a child. It will take lots of checking under the bed, for monster that hides there, before that part of your brain believes it. Start with controlling breathing, which is first aid for Stress/Fear when it is happening, like I mentioned on in an earlier post. If you need more detail on breathing google Zen (meditation) or Yoga breathing. I have more of a background in Zen, from martial arts & stress management for school & work.
Yoga breathing techniques quickly become very advanced, but if your even halfway good at most Yoga breathing techniques you will have far more breath control skill than you need for most SC2 pressure. Yoga would be a good component of practice for a Pro Gamer, not only do you learn superb Breath Control, you also learn a lot about flexibility and posture.
Other than breath control, you need to teach yourself that you can succeed & that losing can't hurt you. That will take LOTS of repetition. Start with schooling. Schooling, in the psychological sense, is providing a reward for any positive result no matter how small. But then as time goes by, requiring closer to the ideal action/performance to earn the award.
Example of schooling, that actual psychology students did to a prof, one day every time the prof moved towards one side of the room during a lecture they would pay attention and focus on the Professor. Whenever he went in the other direction they would look away or start playing with their pencils or whatever. They managed to get him crammed in the corner in response to this, then they told him what they had done.
Now if they had only rewarded or punished him when he was in one corner or the other it would never have worked. Lectures don't normally stand in the corners. But by schooling him, they were able to get him moving in the direction they wanted.
So work on telling yourself in game that your doing good, and that everything is okay. Reward yourself whenever you feel yourself relaxing when things are going bad in game. The reward can just be a mental, or even verbal to yourself, "good job".
Use Schooling by rewarding yourself for any progress at the beginning, but slowly make yourself work harder to earn that "good job". Ideally you want to get to the point were you can lose or win and not feel big difference either way, in game, this means your more relaxed and less stressed. So you will be able to perform better.
Note, I am not saying you can't still feel good or bad over winning or losing, more that keeping calm enough to stay focused in game will improve your performance.
One of the reasons that watching replays is so important, besides understanding why you lost, is to teach yourself that losing doesn't hurt you. You want to watch the replays calmly and relaxed, it is fine to watch them hour or two after your done playing for the day. Or to have a day of watching replays between days of playing.
That interval of time will help you to calm down and focus on the actual game play, without telling yourself that losing means your going to die. Additionally, if you and training partners both or all do this, then you will also have a social group to talk to about losing in a productive fashion, so you will be teaching yourself that you don't lose status because you lose a game.
Fact is you can gain status from losing a game, if you can learn how to become a stronger player by analyzing that replay.
Visualization, Closing the Circle
One of the best training tools in world only takes time and effort to use. It is called Visualization. It is used by Professional and Olympic Athletes among many many others. Breath Control and Meditation techniques from Zen or Yoga tie in very well with Visualization. Basically you imagine, or pretend, in your mind specific situation. Say that your being Six Pooled and you play Protoss.
You would imagine, with as much detail and precision as you can, what you would see and feel when you spot that. Then you would imagine the correct response. Getting pylon down in mineral line, microing Probes, etc. It is like using a simulator. Remember this part of the brain is very simple, like a child. It can not tell pretend, or imagination, from reality.
This type of practice has pretty much the same effect as "real" practice. Skilled people tend to use Visualization, whether they know it by that name or not, a lot. They may just call it "thinking about the game" or something else. One of the reasons Visualization is so important, is that you can use it anywhere & anytime as long as you can mentally focus on what you want to imagine.
It is a easy way to get in more practice without much risk of over training. You can also use Visualization as way to "replay" a game you lost. Or even a game you won, but were you made some mistake. You can just imagine the game as you played it, till you get to the mistake you made, then visualize the different game play and what responses the enemy would be likely to use.
If you really want to get good at this, start playing Chess as practice for SC2. Many/Most Chess Masters can play Blindfold Chess. While all Grand Master Chess players can play blindfolded. Because Chess is a TBS (Turn Based Strategy) game, you have to be able to visualize the game to be able to play well.

Starcraft 2 Thoughts: PvZ dealing with Mutas with Gateways units
This post is about Protoss dealing with Mutas, specifically with Gateway units, since to effectively use Stargate counters to Mutas you need to Metagame, blind counter, or open with a Stargate build in order to have enough Phoenix to be effective.
Or you need a solid plan to transition to Stargate if a Muta switch catches you unprepared. One of the best instructors I ever had would frequently state that you need to have a Planned, Practiced, Proper Response in place ahead if time, if you wanted a real chance of succeeding.
Active use of Robo vs Muta
If Zerg times it well, you might have Robo Support Bay done or almost done, when they show Mutas or you scout the Spire, maybe even have 2 Robo's up for Colossus production. Don't be afraid to make a couple, or even a few Warp Prism, as well as extra Observers.
Warp Prism speed and Observer speed upgrades will help maintain map vision despite the Mutas. You can also apply pressure with drops, send Warp Prisms to 2 or more bases at the same time and just warp in Zealots at any Zerg base that the Warp Prism makes it to, killing Queens, drones, Extractors, or even tech structures can only help. And your only risking minerals.
You can even try to be tricky and put a Probe in a Warp Prism, with Prism in Warp mode Probe can start cannon building in the energy field, along with a Pylon to power the cannons, and then fly off in the Prism once they are started. You only need field to start and run a building, not to finish warp in once started.
Again your only risking minerals and you can always cancel warp in if it is attacked before it is finished. You can use this offensively to control a choke or future enemy expo (ie set it up ahead of time to deny or slow Zerg getting 3rd or 4th), or as a defensive technique to get another expo up.
Gateway Units vs Mutas
Stalkers and Sentries are the key first response to Mutas if you have a Gateway army when Mutas appear. You can also counter attack if you have Zealots and/or Immortals, as Mutas in low numbers can't kill them fast.
Generally if your going Gateway or deathball, you should be getting Attack and Shield upgrades maxed ASAP, followed by Armor upgrades. Ideally with early 2nd Forge and near constant Chronoboost, since fast upgrades is a key advantage Protoss has over Zerg or Terran.
Despite what many people think, Shield upgrades are a far better than Armor upgrades, that is why they cost more. This is true for at least two reasons. First, as a general rule Protoss try to avoid taking "hull" damage, damage to HP that is, so Armor upgrade will do you no good if your doing that. Second, even in situations were your units do take hull damage, there will be fewer enemy units attacking by the time the shields are gone, because you will have killed some (so the Shield upgrade is protecting you from damage when armies first fight and neither side has lost any units).
Additionally, it is the only upgrade in the entire game AFAIK, that affects all units and structures! All Protoss Buildings, Gateway, Robo, & Stargate units/structures get the shield upgrade. So it helps a lot in base race situations and to lesser extent for defending drops or Air Attacks/Harass at mineral line.
Most people, including me until I looked at the numbers, thought Sentry's were very low DPS units. I am not saying they are high DPS units, but with +3 Attack Sentries & Stalkers have the same DPS of 9 vs light units like Mutas!
Stalkers still have twice the HP & Shields, but the key point to realize is that you can add a LOT of Sentries without hurting your DPS when dealing with Muta or Muta/Ling. So you can have a lot of Guardian shield for dealing with Mutas. Or to defend a Ling or Roach push behind the Mutas.
Actually it lets you have surplus Guardian Shield so the Mutas can't focus down the one or two Sentries protecting their brothers with Guardian Shield.
I am not sure what best ratio of Sentry to Stalkers would be, but even at 1 Sentry to 1 Stalker (175 mineral 150 gas 4 food per pair) that unit comp would be cheaper than Mutas (200 minerals 200 gas 4 food per pair). I think something close to 1 Sentry to 3 Stalkers would be close, not sure, but anything less than 1 Sentry to 1 Stalker is an even bigger economic advantage in gas savings.
Nice change for Protoss to be able to counter an expensive unit with cheaper unit comp, don't you think? ^-^
Since the Sentry/Stalker unit comp will be far cheaper than Mutas, and Protoss has Chronoboost; Protoss really should have an upgrade advantage for a while vs Mutas. The plan is to have Stargate, or HT + Storm out, or larger economy before you lose the upgrade advantage.
This unit mix could lead to some fun pushes, remember Hallucination gives you 2 Zealots or Stalkers,or 4 Probes per spell , that can be used as meat shield in addition to Guardian Shield & Force Field if your pushing against Spinecrawlers with a mainly Sentry/Stalker army.
As the game progresses, if Zerg is smart they will get Armor upgrades for air, which will shift the DPS balance slightly in favor of the Stalkers over the Sentries. But current state of the game still has most Zerg totally mixed up about upgrades. Almost always they should be getting Air Armor upgrades, but Zerg mostly get Attack upgrades for Air and no armor.
In any case this isn't intended as a complete solution to Mutas, rather these ideas are just my thoughts on how to deal with sudden Muta transition from Zerg, with solid play if all you have is Gateway units to fight them because you were going for Colossus based deathball or Gateway only Army.
Obviously if Zerg is going hard Mutas you will want to add HT + Storm, or Stargate to get Phoenix and/or Carriers.
Carriers are actually good against Mutas, if you have critical mass of them, or enough support. It takes 1.5 Carriers to one shot Muta, ie 3 Carriers will one shot 2 Mutas. As long as Air attack upgrades matches Zerg Air Armor upgrade.
If you using Carriers get Air armor upgrades ahead of air attack upgrades. Because not only does the that make the Carrier with it's base 2 Armor harder for Mutas to kill, it also helps every single little interceptor last longer.

MLG Hotpockets link to redeem your code
[updated 19:25 EST]
http://store.majorleaguegaming.com/hotpockets
If you got a code from the eat play win for free month of Silver MLG membership this is link used to redeem code. It should be in the email they send you with it.
Note if your having problems the code may not be active until a day or so after you get it. Or you may have to log in and out. Or log in and then manually go back to above link to enter your code for free month.
From what I have heard it can be a little annoying, after the above you will still have to go to your Membership area https://accounts.majorleaguegaming.com/account/membership
after getting the free silver membership activated to get your event/stream Voucher code.
Then enter that in stream when you select high video quality settings (selecting high video just gets the window to popup so you can enter voucher number).
Lot of steps.
I know lot of people have difficulty with navigation on MLG's website. It isn't user friendly at all, I find googling for page I want on MLG website works far better than trying to navigate in the site itself.
Note sure I have covered it fully, but did what I could. Hope this helps.
Feel free to post questions or help in the comments section. You don't have to have Blogger account to post on my blog. Actually unless I have problems with spam I will continue to allow people to post anonymously.

SC2 Streams, couple of observations.
I got to see some great practice games between desRow and various practice partners today.
I saw him practice with Pokebunny & boyo today.
I encourage everyone to check out their streams.
I was really impressed with the practice and being able to hear the GM's talk to each other about the game and builds.
Was really cool that Pokebunny and boyo were streaming as well as desRow during the practice games so you could see what both players were doing during the practice games.
Like desRow said, that is very good & useful, I wished more pros did that.
I also think it was really impressive that desRow gave shoutout to boyo, a fairly new to the SC2 scene GM, boyo really appreciated it.
IMO that level of Manner or Courtesy is truly impressive. Big part of what draws me to Starcraft 2, is seeing things like that.
GG WP!

Today compLexity is excited to announce the official signing of Michael "goswser" Dobler. This marks the first "graduation" we have had from the compLexity Academy. Michael had an outstanding run at MLG Orlando defeating some big names and since Orlando his online play has been nothing short of excellent.
Computer Tech: Server based gaming?
I wonder if gaming will move to high performance SuperServers, played from consoles that are used as "dumb" terminals?
Would be one way for Blizzard and others to deal with DRM & Piracy issues.
This quote from Amazon really got me thinking about it, if they can get latency low enough:

On a somewhat smaller scale, you can launch your own array of 290 CC2 instances and create a Top500 supercomputer (63.7 teraFLOPS) at a cost of less than $1000 per hour (perhaps a lot less, depending on conditions in the Spot Market).

WhiteRa displaying Awesomeness!
Watching WhiteRa streaming ladder http://www.twitch.tv/whitera
And he just did something that really impressed me. WhiteRa is good at doing that!
This particular game was vs Zerg on Shattered Temple, and WhiteRa is doing his normal Warp Prism Zealot drops. Was going Colossus but Zerg went heavy Muta so Colossus production was dropped off in favor of Stalkers, with Blink, and Archons.
Now the part that I think was Awesome, so good I am going to use it myself, is once Blink was done and he had his first two Archons done he loaded the Archons in the Prism (think had speed upgrade for Prism as well) and attacked Zerg main with 2 Archons & Blink Stalkers!
Was really cool, far faster than using Obs for the blink, plus added the power of the Archons to the attack, with option to reinforce with warp if wanted.
Don't think I have seen that before, is simple but elegant attack. Should be much harder to defend because of the speed of the attack vs using Obs for vision, and Obs can be scouted if opponent is good on defense.
This was almost like a Zerg drop with Nydus support!
Most brilliant SC2 concept I have seen this month hands down!

Starcraft 2 Skills: Planned Structured Practice
One of the things I suggest for serious gamers is they break their practice up into different segments or parts.
Here is an example that I might give to a player I was coaching.
Day 1 Ladder play, using builds that you have practiced, and saving replays.
Day 2 Watch the replays from ladder games & take notes on what was done wrong and what was done right.
Day 3 Practice games with Training partner, or Micro practice on Training map. Focus on the things you learned from the ladder replays. Ideally watch replays of practice games, with you focusing on your partner's play, and your partner focusing on your play. Far easier to be object of someone else than of yourself.
Day 4 Watch Pro games, ideally replays, but VODs can help as well, ideally you would have one or two pros of the race you play, that you focus on. Good idea to watch game through once without much, or any rewinding, to get a feel for it. Day9 does this at x8, I tend to use x4 and x2 mostly. Then start over going slower and rewinding, while taking notes.
Day 5 Rest from SC2, do something fun or productive. Try not to sit in front of computer or TV, you want to give your body a break to recover. Eyes & hands are not up to being on computer all the time!
Now this is just an EXAMPLE, to illustrate the idea of a Planned Structured Practice routine. It is not cast in stone.
This is a Five day plan, a semi serious player might take weekend off or do whatever for fun.
While a Pro, or someone who is striving to to be a pro, might just loop back to Day 1 when day 6 comes around, or make a Seven day plan. Or even a ten day plan, you don't have to have plans that line up with the calendar.
You can also do what is called double splits, which means you break day into 2 parts, usually morning and evening. Do one workout in the morning, then go work, play, or rest till the evening when you do your second workout.
Note that every day of gaming is followed by a day of Watching.
That is because Recovery is a critical component of improving as much as practice. Many Athletics have a hard time giving their body and mind enough recovery time, because they feel like they are being lazy then.
You actually improve during the Recovery phase of training, not during the exertion phase. When you lift weights, if you don't give your muscles adequate time to recover before the next workout, you actually limit your gains, it is called over training.
Muscles need, for most people, 2-3 days of recovery. To deal with this problem serious weight lifters work different muscles on different days. That way they can work out more often, yet still give their muscles plenty of time to recover.
To fully development and retain skills you also require Sleep. When you sleep your brain sort of filters out a lot of the little things from the day, leaving the events or actions that you spent a lot of time or a lot of focus on.
Sleep actually helps you get what you worked on during the day into long term memory.
Another important point for gamers is that lack or sleep or fatigue, basically lowers your IQ and reaction speed. It also affects your judgment. Just like being drunk impairs you, so does fatigue.
Stress causes fatigue, so anything that causes a lot of stress, say a real intense close game, can lead to fatigue, and thus impaired performance quickly. Even if you started well rested and focused. This is part of the reason why Tournaments are harder, or why driving your car in a blizzard can be completely exhausting.
If you catch yourself doing something really stupid, and you don't know why, there is a really good chance it is because your fatigued.
As a Coach and Trainer, I want to point out it is much harder to break a bad habit, than it is to learn it correct the first time.
If you practice when your fatigued you will be playing incorrectly, so you will actually be practicing poor play, or in simple terms you will be practicing how to LOSE!
Which means you will have to spend more time unlearning your bad habits you drilled in while to fatigued to play well.
So Stop playing when that happens and do something else.
Try taking a break, get up from the computer. Walk around a little bit, eat a healthy snack, & hydrate! You will be surprised how much that can help. You can use this at tournaments as well. A five or ten minute break can really improve your performance.
The more Tournaments you play in the less it will get to you. The more familiar you with something the less it will stress you out.
Physical Conditioning also helps a lot. Cardio/Aerobic exercise is more important for this than strength training. Thought they both help.
Being fit helps in at least two ways, one because a fit body is stronger, stress causes less fatigue. The other is that you will have more energy and endurance, so while you will get fatigued it will have a smaller effect.
Here is an example that I might give to a player I was coaching.

Axslav streaming EU Playhem

I have not seen a lot of Axslav's games yet, a friend suggested his games because I am interested in Phoenix play. [Note: for me lots means more than a 100 games]
Real impressed with Axslav's stream so far, he does a lot of answering chat questions.

PSA: Steam Accounts Hacked, watch your CC transactions!
I don't like posting stuff without primary sources, but I can't find a link to direct post from Valve CEO Gabe Newell that the links below are citing. If anyone has that please post it or tweet me.
Short version is Forums on Steam were hacked, and the Hackers also had Access to email, credit card data, and etc. But they don't know if the file was taken, or if it was if the Hackers would be able to break the encryption.
I have ars link because I know them, and they are pretty good news source for stuff. Kotaku is new to me, but they look legit. Just not 100% positive yet about Kotaku.
Kotaku spells out how to change Steam Passwork and such if you have questions.

To see other playlists on my Blog just click playlist you can also find that link in the label cloud at left side of the blog.

PSA: A nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System will occur on Wednesday, November 9 at 2:00 PM EDT via TV and radio stations
Public Service Announcement (PSA):
A nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System will occur on Wednesday, November 9 at 2:00 PM EST/EDT via TV and radio stations.
Source: http://www.fema.gov/
Detailed Information: http://www.fema.gov/eastest/
***
From what I understand this will be on every USA station at the same time. Just a test, figured I might as well post notice here. So a few more people will know it is happening, and can plan on getting a refill during this. Not sure if it will affect the net directly or not.

Totalbiscuit and Apollo are casting this event, I like Totalbiscuit & Apollo a lot as a casting Team, I like them better even than Artosis & Tasteless.
I like Ayesee & Redmage, Ascend & Thundertoss (those two casting teams are excellent, Ayesee & Redmage are funnier most of the time, while Thundertoss and Ascend have a bit deeper understanding of the game IMO), Totalbiscuit & Apollo, then Artosis & Tastless.
Now this is just my personal preference, I prefer knowledge Casters over shoutcasters, but I like funny as well. I think Apollo and Totalbicuit balance Shoutcasting and knowledge casting very well.
I think my sense of humor is closer to Ayesee & Redmage though. While Tastosis try to hard to be funny for my tastes at times. Though from what Day9 and others have said they are even funnier in person. Maybe they are trying to hard to be respectable on camera?
All of those Casting Teams are good though, if your not familiar with one of them check them out. All of them can be found on my blog either on right for Stream & VOD links or on the left for Twitter.

Petition for Kiwikaki to stream
I like many of his other Fans would like to see Kiwikaki stream. Even if he could only do so a couple times a month, it would be appreciated.
I know Kiwikaki was talking to Destiny about how much money could be made from streaming, so if enough people say they would like to see him stream and would watch it maybe we can persuade him to do so!
So if you would like to see Kiwikaki stream please post a comment below.
Keep it Mannered & Polite.
I will edit or delete BM!

Thundertoss Interview!
I am a big fan of Thundertoss, he has coached Pro Players Destiny and Minigun.
I think he has best strategic understanding of Starcraft 2 of anyone out there. Anyone that wants to get better at SC2 should listen to him!
Link here for coaching from Thundertoss. Or follow his Blog link. Stream link. Twitter @thundertoss
Let him know you found him from Cliff's blog. He doesn't get the attention he deserves yet.
