2011 MLG Orlando Beta Streams, Weekend Pass, etc

I got a weekend pass for MLG Orlando.  First time for me, so I thought I would share my thoughts, I know for previous MLG's I was really on the fence about getting a pass.  Kept looking for reviews from people that had it, so here are my quick thoughts.  Post a question in comment section if you have one, you should be able to post as anonymous.

Overview:  High Quality setting is watchable but doesn't seem like HD, Ultra is better.  Ultra seems like it is 780 or close, worth the weekend pass fee IMHO.  I can run two streams at high or 1 at ultra and other at high with stuttering on the High.  [Edited, for my computer Ultra + anything else isn't stable with MLG's setup, it just crashed.  I don't have a REAL powerful computer but I can handle two 720 streams from Twitch or similar no problem.]

Beta Streams: I am likening the streams from the floor (the Beta Streams 1&2 or Silver and Black), watching Boxer vs Drewbie right now.

I am a lot more interested in  the floor play than many of the stage games.  Huk is was playing July, I respect both of those players, but Huk's play is really Micro/Control focused which isn't my favorite play style to watch.

NOTE:  Only two settings Medium or Ultra for the the Beta Streams!  Medium is same as free stream.

Cons/Feedback:  Some audio issues, but I was having that on the free stream also. Not a big deal to me because I frequently turn audio off on casts.  But I watch about 10 hours a day of VOD, Stream, & replays.

Conclusion:  So if your debating getting the weekend pass I would say it is worth the $10, specially if like me you want to see games of some of your favorite Players that won't be on the stage much, if at all.

Stream quality is significant improvement over free stream.

MLG MMA vs drewbie VOD

Link to Game 1

Here is link to my comments from when event was happening.

MLG Replay, well VODs best can do here is link to all of them

According to MLG this is link to all VODs in order.  Just what they casted for the event, none of the games that were played off stage.  I will keep looking for and posting links to all of those other games that I can find.  In addition I will still be posting links to individual games of interest to me from the MLG site.

VOD link is also on right side of the blog.

FYI, they are unwatchable on my (old) desktop my CPU or graphics card can't handle how they have the stream set up.  It looks like real bad lag, I tried to lower quality but it won't let me change the setting, which might just be my computer.

Stream is fine on my laptop, my gaming machine, just figured I would give people a heads up.

MLG Anahiem Tod vs GGlastshadow VOD

Game 3 [No link]

Not sure what the deal was with this one, Wyrd (caster), says he got it off of Gosugamers but I couldn't find any MLG replays from Anaheim there.

Maybe it was a mistake and got taken down quickly??

MLG Anaheim VOD

I will be putting up links to VODs starting later today or tomorrow, a few are already out, if there are any you are having trouble finding a specific game or match up, post about it here and I will see if I can find it for you.

Just in case anyone from MLG takes a look at this page I, and others, would be willing to pay more for replays than stream or VODs.

Because of time zone issues for Europe and Korea your also missing out on large part of your potential market.  Your simply not giving them ability to buy your product.  Not all SC2 fans are English.  Not even sure if majority of SC2 fans are native english speakers even if they know some english.  So VODs by english speaking casters are probably not going to be a big draw to them.

MLG Anaheim replays

MLG says they won't release them, their statement here, I have very strong doubts about the factual basis of their statement.

Plenty of players and events release replay packs, so I suspect real answer is something else.

Probably money.

I note they are not offering replays with memberships either, or at least they are not mentioning them on their website, I was going to get a membership till I realized it was auto renew with no opt out.

I would have been willing to pay more for one time fee to have MLG Anaheim only video pass, especially if I could watch replays.

I am getting to the point that even the best casters just can't do good enough job covering game for me to LEARN from them.  They can only cover one spot of the map at a time, and they haven't worked replays into esports yet like they do NFL (American) Football to be sure fans watching get to see important or exciting replay.

Please note, I am not knocking the casters.  When I watch good replays, I often will go over certain parts 2-4 times frequently to figure out exactly what happened, I want to see what each player was actually looking at during each moment, what Production tab shows, what the upgrades where for various units.  Also what income is at, what they are spending money on, etc.

Sometimes when there is something new, or new to me I may go over one little slice of time in the game many many times to determine all I possibly can.

But then like Day9 & Spanishiwa, among I suspect many other SC2 players and fans, I came to SC2 from competitive Chess background.  Analyzing games is something I have lot of practice with, one of the very cool to me things about SC2 over Chess is games are recorded as video, not notes of describing every piece being moved, so I can focus on what happened and why.  I don't have to keep looking at the recorded moves and move the pieces on a board to see everything.  Note to hardcore chess players, yes I know many really good chess players can see the image looking at the notation but I have never been able to get the visual and verbal parts of my brain to connect internally like that.

I am real disappointed with the no replay being released from MLG, I think that is totally wrong move for SC2.

If there is a legitimate DOS [Denial of Service] issue why can't they work with Bllizard or some experts to find a way around that issue?

MLG Anaheim WhiteRa vs Select

Go WhiteRa!!!

Wow, Select is looking strong in Game 1, he took an early hidden expansion.  Which seemed to throw off WhiteRa's planning a bit.

Select started doing drops, and managed to take out Twilight Council early on, WhiteRa didn't bother to remake it.  Choosing to rely on Zealot, Archon, Sentry while teching to Colossus.

In first real engagement Select got off some killer EMP's plus WhiteRa's army was to spread out trying to avoid EMP, so Select won that engagement and was able to move remmnents of his main army into WhiteRa's base, snipped Robo right before Colossus popped & also got first Colossus that popped from other Robo.  WhiteRa forced to GG.

Game 2, WhiteRa looking simply impressive.  Select starts out with lot of very early harassement.  Select does a gas steal & drops an Ebay in WhiteRa's natural.

Whitera response with a quick double expansion, very Zerg like, follows it with Robo and Obs first.  Then he makes Warp Prism while researching charge and getting Templar Archieves.  Loads Prism with zealots, and keep Obs on Selects front ramp so he can see when the army moves out.

When Select moves out WhiteRa Backstabs, means counterattack when oppoenent moves out, very effective because that is when your enemy is least able to defend.

Select loses half his army attacking WhiteRa's 3rd, army was split in half with perfect forcefields.

Lot of battles of maneuver while WhiteRa drops at every opportunity, until Ra gets perfect mousetrap on Select's army near Select's third.  Everything pretty much over then, WhiteRa takes down Natural also.  Though Ra over commits on the ramp into the main.  So game drags out for a little while longer but WhiteRa has 3 bases to 1.  WhiteRA wins Game 2.

Game 3, WhiteRa starts out very strong, takes his gold at about 7:55 mark for a very quick 3rd, then follows up with good attack when Select is trying to take his Natural.  WhiteRa delays Select's natural for a little bit, which is huge considering that Ra had a gold going up for 3rd before SElect took Natural!

Select gets a awesome snipe of Twilight Council just a second or two before charge finishes.  Which gives him huge advantage for the next several minutes.  Select capitalizes on on that advantage and forces engagement with WitheRa's main army, kills all the slow 'lots.

Snipes the gold Base, and attacks the Natural just before the first Colossus pops, and is able to focus down the Colossus immediately.  WhiteRa is forced to GG, very mannered with GG WP.

Select responds very mannered also.

MLG Anaheim Whitra vs Drewbie

YES!  I can't pick between them, who wants WhiteRa to lose?  But I am a Catz/Drewbie fan, maybe it will end in a draw.

WhiteRa takes Game 1 they both moved out at roughly the same time for first big push.  But WhiteRa had moved out just few seconds earlier, so WhiteRa army is much closer to Drewbie's base when the two armies cross paths out of sight of each other.  Since both armies missed each other, WhiteRa is able to get into Drewbie's main base with his gateway army, including sentries.  So WhiteRa can forcefield the ramp to keep Drebie's army out if needed.

Fortunately for Drewbie, he had medivacs.  So he tried elevatoring back into the base, so forcefields wouldn't block or cut his army in half, but ended up taking to much damage & that led to him losing the game.

Game 2 WhiteRa gets 10 gates, + couple of obs and a warp prism.  Using an Archon & Chargelot Army.  Adds a 11th gate while moving out his ground army.

Whitera Drops the main with pair of Archons on the mineral line, when Drewbie pulls his army to deal with the drop WhiteRa hits the front with Chargelots & 4 Archons.

Drewbie takes out Warp Prism and both Archons it dropped, and defends the attack on the front no problem.  WhiteRa starts Dark Shrine towards end of his attack on Drewbie's front.

Second clash happens a bit outside Drewbie's main, his Ghosts only manage to hit Zealots with EMP, Archons basically untouched.  WhiteRA has 6+ Archons and tons of Zealots.

During the battle WhiteRa drops single zealot, he likes to hit mineral lines with one or two zealots anytime he can during a fight, he just sends them on move command to mineral line or drops them, this time I believe he dropped one zealot to cover the attacks of the DT's  he warped in Drewbie's main.

Drewbie GG

WhiteRa takes it 2-0, knocking Drewbie out of MLG Anaheim.

MLG Anaheim Ret vs Rain

Rain wins Game 1

Ret wins game 2, had 42 mutalisks in the end game!

Ret loses game 3, was a very hard fought game. But Rain was abusing the power of Blue Flame Hellions. Almost 40 drones were killed in the early game.
