Nerd News: Samsung September 4, 2013 Event & Live Stream

[Note: if you start embedded live stream before event, it will display a countdown timer]

Live Stream link https://www.youtube.com/user/SAMSUNGmobile

If rumors are correct we will get to see new Galaxy Note 3!

We might also see a new Smartwatch.

As I blogged about a year ago http://cliffsesportcorner.blogspot.com/2012/09/nerd-news-samsung-october-24-2012-event.html I was really interested in the Note 2, unfortunately I couldn't fit that into my budget until a few months ago, so I decided to wait for Note 3, got a cheap Nokia Lumia 521 (WP8) to tide me over, since my Blackberry was failing.

Of course Google dropped price on the Nexus 4 week after I went with the Lumia 521, seems like the way it always goes for me T_T

I am hoping we see a Google Play edition of the Note 3, really really want that.

Nerd Gear: "Sub-Zero Weather: Can Your Smartphone Stand The Cold?"

http://www.pcworld.com/article/249134/sub_zero_weather_can_your_smartphone_stand_the_cold_.html

Came across this interesting article, while doing some research, my gf is planning on biking to work all winter, ordering studded tires for her Bike this week, and she was wondering about taking her work laptop back and forth that way when it is really cold.

Told her condensation would probably be biggest problem most days she felt like biking in the winter vs taking car.

Seems like that is probably the case, as long as you let device warm to room temperature before using.

I know I have used Feature Phones (aka Dumb Phones) in the past when it was very cold, approaching -40 Fahrenheit/Celsius (-40 is same in either system).

The phone was in my coat or pants pocket, always worked when I needed it to, but I was in and out of the car, so not sure how cold the phone really got then.

Was delivering News Papers on weekend one Fall/Winter, mainly rural and one small town, also burned out tranny in my car with that job busting snowdrifts over the hood of my car!

Nerd Gear: Phonebuff's "Samsung Galaxy Note 2: Top 10 Features"

The written version of article can be found at http://www.phonebuff.com/2012/11/samsung-galaxy-note-2-top-10-features/

As I have mentioned before, the Galaxy Note 2 is the smartphone that I am planning to upgrade to, though I keep looking for more information, that is just the way I am, I don't assume there isn't something more to learn.

I liked this review, hope you find it useful as well, if you know of any other really good reviews, either Pro or Con, about the Note 2 please leave a reply.

Nerd Gear: Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Dock lets you add keyboard, mouse, and HDMI display

I didn't know Samsung was going to release this dock http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones-accessories/EDD-S20JWEGSTA

Though it was displayed at IFA 2012, never really saw much info about it, and assumed it had been dropped.

If you lock at the picture here, http://www.androidcentral.com/samsung-launches-galaxy-note-2-smart-dock-yours-100, you will see the dock in it's closed or traveling position.

This dock gives you a total of 3 USB 2.0 ports (there are 2 USB ports on one side, and 1 USB port on the other side), and a HDMI out, as well as 3.5mm stereo audio out.

I am trying to find out if any/all of the USB ports are powered, if not, then you would want either USB flash drive or powered external HDD for data storage with this dock.

With either of those storage options, and a HDMI TV or monitor, you could be watching Blu Ray movies!

I am planning on getting a Galaxy Note 2 as a Christmas present for myself this year, now I am going to have to budget for this dock as well.

Once I have both, I will see if my Das keyboard will work with it, not sure if the Das needs powered USB connections or not, have to say the idea of a dock like this, combine with external HDD, and a mouse and mechanical keyboard is very interesting.

Don't know that I would have a lot of real use for it, more likely to use the dock just for charging and the HDMI out to use full size screen.

But this does mean I could just carry the dock and a keyboard with me, instead of a laptop, and still be able to blog easily while away from home.

Nerd News: Samsung October 24, 2012 Event

http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9231772/Samsung_Galaxy_Note_2_coming_to_U.S._Oct._24_

No one knows for sure, but rumors are this will be launch announcement/party for Galaxy Note 2 in the US, this is the day before Microsoft event for Windows 8 so I wouldn't be surprised if there is something more or different.

I am hoping for more information on Galaxy Note 2, I am looking to switch to Note 2 from my Blackberry Bold 9780 when my current contract ends near Christmas.

Gonna miss all the hot key shortcuts Blackberry has, but RIM seems like it is in a death spiral, Google on the other hand seems rock solid.

How To Pair PS3 Playstation 3 Controller to Samsung Galaxy S3

Figured I should provide a link showing how to do this, since I posted about the GameKlip.

Nerd Gear: GameKlip for Android

GameKlip http://buy.thegameklip.com/

[Edited to add, check out FAQ for links for checking on compatibility with controller and games that support it http://buy.thegameklip.com/pages/faqs]

This looks cool, they have wireless version available for Rooted phones, and wired version for non Rooted Phones.

They briefly demo Minecraft, a game I would use this for, I also like how it seems balanced enough to use as a stand, see Twit.TV review link below for example.

Also as a Trekkie, I notice how it looks a lot like a Starship from Star Trek ^_^

After I get my Galaxy Note 2, assuming they make clip for that phone, I will definitely give this a try.

Security & Hacking: Samsung Touchwiz Vulnerability

Update:  sounds like there are patches out there according to this tweet https://twitter.com/TeamAndIRC/status/250603353665593344
"last week's AT&T SGSIII update fixed this issue, the international one has been fixed for some time."

Saw this article on The Verge http://www.theverge.com/2012/9/25/3403928/samsung-touchwiz-reset-vulnerability

Talks about Demo Dirty use of USSD Codes:

 Via Tweet https://twitter.com/pof/status/250540790491787264:
the USSD code to factory data reset a Galaxy S3 is *2767*3855# can be triggered from browser like this: <frame src="tel:*2767*3855%23" />

From what I understand the problem is Touchwiz, not the underlying or base Android :/
